Duplication Media at 8659 Douglas in the Westdale Center draws customers looking for everything from 2,000 compact discs to parents looking for a way to preserve an old audio tape. Owner Jason Olson started the business in September of 2003.
Duplication Media specializes in CD duplication, DVD duplication, videotape duplication, audio to CD transfers and video to DVD transfers. A native of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Olson earned a degree in broadcasting and film from Central Missouri State University. From there he worked for a newspaper and in radio broadcasting and advertising. He and his wife eventually moved to Kansas City where he worked for five years in video production. In that capacity he did on- location shooting, editing, duplication, film to video transfers and slide transferring. After the birth of their daughter the couple decided to move closer to family in Des Moines. Olson worked for three years in the duplication department of an audio/visual company. Seeing a need for a duplication media company in the suburbs with expanded services, Olson decided to open his own business in Urbandale.
The bulk of his business from individuals is transferring old videotapes such as home videos to DVDs. A two hour video would cost about $35 to transfer to a DVD. "Video tape will degrade every time you play it," said Olson. "DVDs will last a hundred years with no effect from playing it over and over, plus it is easier to find a particular scene you're looking for on DVD. I put a chapter mark every three minutes on a new DVD." Reel to reel audio tapes with sentimental value are also safer on a CD.
"Last week a couple stopped in with a reel to reel audio tape and asked how long it would take to have it put on CD. I said I could have it done the next morning and they said that they lived near the Missouri border and they were leaving town in 30 minutes. They said that their tape was only a five minute broadcast from the radio of their daughter's birth announcement 32 years ago," said Olson. "I said it would take me 10 to 15 minutes to get set up and assuming everything works, I'll have it done in 20 minutes. They left to do a little shopping and I was finishing up their order as they returned."
Much of his work with companies is to duplicate CDs. He has worked with a local insurance company to make 2,000 CDs of their quarterly manual to send to agents all over the country. Another specialty of Olson's is conversion of foreign videotape. Video taken in Europe will not play on an American machine, so Duplication Media can convert the video so that it can be used here. Likewise, he can change video into one of the formats used in Europe for an overseas relative or business.
